Kanye West held his first rally to kick-off his presidential campaign in South Carolina, amid a tight deadline to get his name on the ballot. Whether He would qualify to appear on the ballot before the deadline remains uncertain.
Appearing with a bulletproof vest and “2020” shaved onto the back of his head, Kanye West took to stage for an hour-long speech about his position on subjects like abortion, pornography and certain policies — no microphones or podiums, just his amplified voice. He welcomed various attendees to the stage, too, to engage in open debates with the crowd. Ye responded to comments blurted out by event-goers to segue into long explanations about his personal views on the respective matters. For example, when a young woman claimed that social media brainwashes children, West diverged into how prescription drugs also alter reality. At another point, Kanye stated how the US could do a better job supporting pregnant women, suggesting to give out $1 million USD to each mother to see their pregnancy through.
Controversially, West also made a statement about Harriet Tubman (found at 16:04 in the above video), stating “she never actually freed the slaves, she just had the slaves go work for other white people,” which quickly confused and angered the crowd.
Later on, West broke down in tears after revealing that he and his wife Kim Kardashian West were close to aborting their first child, but changed their minds after experiencing a “vision of God.” He also floated on the idea of cutting ties with adidas and Gap unless he was placed on the board. As it stands, Kanye is only on the ballot in the state of Oklahoma, and 10,000 signatures are required to get him on South Carolina’s.
