Mark Noble told talkSPORT (11/11/20 at 8:45 am) that Aston Villa and Southampton are ‘doing fantastic’ this season amid talk of allowing five substitutes.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and his rival Pep Guardiola have called for the five-sub rule to be brought back amid the growing muscle injuries to players.
The rule was in place during restart, but for this campaign, 14 Premier League clubs opted against allowing that rule to continue.
Given the heavy fixture load, those at the top have complained at the current situation and West Ham’s captain thinks all of that is allowing clubs like Villa and the Saints to thrive.
“In my eyes, it evens it up a little bit,” said Noble. “The number of games the top boys have to play by going around Europe, especially with internationals that they have got. And with no break whatsoever for the top teams.
“We as West Ham only got two and a half weeks in the summer to go away. I think this season, it will help the bigger teams [by bringing in five subs]. You see the league now, it’s so strange. Not so much with Spurs, they have a great squad.
“But Aston Villa are doing fantastic. Southampton are doing great and the league is a lot more spread than it normally is. I think that’s because of the fatigue, not only in your body but mentally tired – that’s why they are probably moaning.”
Both Villa and the Saints are sitting in the top-six, at this moment in time, and the South Coast club even topped the Premier League table on Friday night.
Given how this crazy season is panning out so far, it will be interesting to see if the above clubs can continue the pace they are going at.
If they can then a potential European finish does beckon because the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United haven’t exactly started the season as they would have liked.
